Muitas vezes se confunde a personalidade com a pessoa, a personalidade com o trabalho. No final, não é proveito para ninguém. De certa forma isso renega a obra, também, porque o que pode acontecer é que, se você é um artista, como Rothko, por exemplo, e resolve se suicidar, isso vai se incorporar à obra para sempre. Pessoas entram na sala de Rothko, na Tate Gallery, em Londres, as crianças gritam: “Uau! Que máximo!”, e só vêem a alegria das cores e dos quadros, enquanto os adultos só vêem o pobre coitado que se matou.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Não, meus caros, Thom Yorke não é crítico de arte, é o letrista e vocalista da banda Radiohead (na minha modesta opinião, um dos melhores acontecimentos musicais dos últimos vinte anos), mas estudou Literatura e Artes Plásticas na Universidade de Exeter, onde conheceu sua companheira Rachel Owen (&lt;a href="http://www.rachel-owen.co.uk/maingallery.htm"&gt;http://www.rachel-owen.co.uk/maingallery.htm&lt;/a&gt;) que é artista plástica com PhD em História da Arte com pesquisa sobre as ilustrações para a Divina Comédia de Dante Alighieri. Thom Yorke assina suas criações visuais com o pseudônimo Dr. Tchock (ele mesmo não confirma essa informação), em colaboração com Stanley Donwood (responsável pela arte da banda, como a incrível capa de “Hail to the Thief”, vale a pena conferir: &lt;a href="http://www.iguapop.net/artists/donwood.html#"&gt;http://www.iguapop.net/artists/donwood.html#&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;A questão é que o comentário do frontman da banda Radiohead me fez pensar, ainda mais do que já venho pensando, na obra e na vida de Mark Rothko, e gostaria de tocar em alguns pontos.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) é geralmente incluído dentro do rol de artistas do Expressionismo Abstrato, estilo que ficou conhecido pela radicalização de alguns processos das vanguardas históricas e principalmente pelas marcas gestuais na pintura de Jackson Pollock com o seu método de lançar a tinta sobre o quadro sem o toque do pincel na tela, mas sim controlando seus respingos (dripping). A obra de Rothko se diferencia bastante da de Pollock, embora seja possível se pensar em uma congruência quando se fala das primeiras experiências de cada um (com formas que me parecem uma criativa assimilação de Kandinsky e Picasso), mais tarde eles vão se envolver com pesquisas estéticas que são completamente individuais e até mesmo opostas. Talvez seja mais adequado falar &lt;st1:personname productid="em New York School" st="on"&gt;em New York School&lt;/st1:personname&gt;, como um círculo artístico que surge na década de 40. O próprio Rothko rejeitava a classificação de expressionismo abstrato para suas obras, e era contrário a “action painting”. Sua pesquisa se aproximava mais da pintura Color Field, trabalhando com campos de cores, o que vai desembocar no minimalismo.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;É possível pensar em Rothko como uma espécie de Mondrian sem geometria, já que os contornos entre os campos de cores não são tão precisos. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Certamente o que vai interessar ao trabalho dele é uma certa pesquisa de cores, trabalhando com determinados contrastes e &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;inclusive com paisagens monocromáticas (seus quadros geralmente são de grandes escalas físicas, o que imagino que &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;cause uma interessante experiência para o espectador da obra na relação do olhar com os grandes campos de cores). Na falta de precisão dos contornos, nos tons imprecisos e na flutuação das cores sobre a tela, certamente podemos ver uma enorme dimensão e preocupação espiritual na obra de Rothko, e sua tendência para a experiência trágica e para os mitos (além do vazio espiritual do homem) faz com que pensemos em uma arte que opere também por catarse, embora seja uma arte de movimentação de cores e não uma representação figurativa. Os sentimentos possíveis através do impacto pelas cores de Mark Rothko são muitos e são cores que já carregam em sua disposição a questão subjetiva.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt; &lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;"&gt;  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;Chegamos então ao suicídio de Mark Rothko. Sim, ele se matou, assim como tantas outras pessoas se mataram. Mas ficam questões. Isso se incorpora mesmo na obra? A dimensão espiritual e ao mesmo tempo trágica de sua pintura se desloca ou se concretiza no suicídio? O suicídio realmente importa? Há só a alegria das cores nos quadros de Rothko? Há só o pobre coitado que se matou nos quadros de Rothko? Qual é a generosidade dos nossos olhares enquanto apreciadores? Qual é a consciência sobre o assunto das nossas mentes enquanto apreciadores? A vida e a obra são coisas separadas? A biografia de um artista é uma mera curiosidade? Faz algum sentido explicarmos um fato estético pela biografia de seu criador? Arte é mímesis, mas de qual mímesis estamos falando? Quais são as fronteiras entre as cores?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p  style="font-family: georgia; text-align: left;font-family:georgia;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;São muitas perguntas, mas Mark Rothko disse: “Silence is so accurate”.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;" class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; /&gt;&lt;em&gt;vendem quando dão.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;Poetas, não.&lt;br /&gt;Policiais e pistoleiros&lt;br /&gt;vendem segurança&lt;br /&gt;(isto é, vingança ou proteção).&lt;br /&gt;Poetas se gabam do limbo, do veto&lt;br /&gt;do censor, do exílio, da vaia&lt;br /&gt;e do &lt;em&gt;dinheiro não&lt;/em&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;Poesia é pão (para&lt;br /&gt;o espírito, se diz), mas atenção:&lt;br /&gt;o padeiro da esquina balofa&lt;br /&gt;vive do que faz; o mais&lt;br /&gt;fino poeta, não.&lt;br /&gt;Poetas dão de graça&lt;br /&gt;o ar de sua graça&lt;br /&gt;(e ainda troçam&lt;br /&gt;— na companhia das traças —&lt;br /&gt;de tal “nobre condição”).&lt;br /&gt;Pastores e padres vendem&lt;br /&gt;lotes no céu&lt;br /&gt;à prestação.&lt;br /&gt;Políticos compram &amp;amp;&lt;br /&gt;(se) be so quiet?&lt;br /&gt;We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it&lt;br /&gt;And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it&lt;br /&gt;Lights flicker from the opposite loft&lt;br /&gt;In this room the heat pipes just cough&lt;br /&gt;The country music station plays soft&lt;br /&gt;But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off&lt;br /&gt;Just Louise and her lover so entwined&lt;br /&gt;And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain&lt;br /&gt;And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train&lt;br /&gt;We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight&lt;br /&gt;Ask himself if it's him or them that's really insane&lt;br /&gt;Louise, she's all right, she's just near&lt;br /&gt;She's delicate and seems like the mirror&lt;br /&gt;But she just makes it all too concise and too clear&lt;br /&gt;That Johanna's not here&lt;br /&gt;The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face&lt;br /&gt;Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously&lt;br /&gt;He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously&lt;br /&gt;And when bringing her name up&lt;br /&gt;He speaks of a farewell kiss to me&lt;br /&gt;He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all&lt;br /&gt;Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall&lt;br /&gt;How can I explain?&lt;br /&gt;Oh, it's so hard to get on&lt;br /&gt;And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial&lt;br /&gt;Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while&lt;br /&gt;But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues&lt;br /&gt;You can tell by the way she smiles&lt;br /&gt;See the primitive wallflower freeze&lt;br /&gt;When the jelly-faced women all sneeze&lt;br /&gt;Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze&lt;br /&gt;I can't find my knees"&lt;br /&gt;Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule&lt;br /&gt;But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him&lt;br /&gt;Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"&lt;br /&gt;But like Louise always says&lt;br /&gt;"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"&lt;br /&gt;As she, herself, prepares for him&lt;br /&gt;And Madonna, she still has not showed&lt;br /&gt;We see this empty cage now corrode&lt;br /&gt;Where her cape of the stage once had flowed&lt;br /&gt;The fiddler, he now steps to the road&lt;br /&gt;He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed&lt;br /&gt;On the back of the fish truck that loads&lt;br /&gt;While my conscience explodes&lt;br /&gt;The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain&lt;br /&gt;And these visions of Johanna –&lt;br /&gt;ósseos, musculares, epiteliais –&lt;br /&gt;e com lã e seda e cetim;&lt;br /&gt;deixe que ela ultrapasse&lt;br /&gt;a forma do casulo e do caracol.&lt;br /&gt;Mais que para um molde ou fantoche,&lt;br /&gt;dê a ela uma vida postiça:&lt;br /&gt;alfabetize-a, andrógina e lasciva;&lt;br /&gt;faça disso um exercício físico.&lt;br /&gt;Contudo ela é seca – frígida – hostil&lt;br /&gt;e se esquiva: sua origem mineral&lt;br /&gt;quer ser definida pelo tempo.&lt;br /&gt;Ela quer ser terra, areia&lt;br /&gt;e alheia nada revela.&lt;br /&gt;Ela se recompõe.&lt;br /&gt;É uma pedra.&lt;br
